Bratislava

The Slovak Republic has been scoring well in terms of foreign direct investment. As a result, money has flowed into the country, despite recent economic issues with the currency.

The country has enjoyed huge amounts of investment. SKK 1.016 billion (28.826 million EUR) in the first quarter of 2005, according to the Slovak Statistics Office.

There has been considerable infrastructure investment. It is easy to see the many projects under construction. Highway connections with Hungary and Austria are already completed on the Slovak side: Austria has committed to complete the joining highway on its territory before the end of 2007. Once complete, this road will join Bratislava with Vienna and beyond.

A number of other road projects - including a fifth bridge across the Danube - mean connections between east and west Bratislava are also being improved.

Modernisation of the country's whole rail network is underway to enable trains to run faster than they currently do and improve connections between the Slovak Republic and Austria.

.

And then look at the country's heavy industry and manufacturing FDI. Bratislava is awash with shared service and contact centres. Dell expect to employ 2,100 staff in Brastislava by the end of the year.

Investment in car manufacturing in the Slovak Republic has been phenomenal, with Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot-Citroen being some of the leading players.

In three years time the country will produce more cars per head of population than any other country in the world. The forecast is 850,000 cars per year in 2008 - and with a population of 5.5 million, that means that they will be producing 1 car per 6.5 people by 2008!

And, not to be outdone, look at service industry investment, too. Hewlett Packard has opened its new European IT centre in Bratislava, creating 350 new jobs. I also picked up news last week that the British Daily Mail and General Trust Media Group bought the Slovak Republic's most popular job server - profesia.sk
